The Eternals is the project that received the most attention from fans in the 4th stage of MCU. The reason why the film is expected to be so, thanks to the cult cast in Hollywood. In which, there are some characters that are completely changed from comics, typically as their gender.
The powerful cast of The Eternals
At Comic-Con, Kevin Feige introduced fans to three new actors including Salma Hayek as Ajak, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari and Lia McHugh as Sprite. What’s interesting about these characters is that while all three are male characters in comics, Marvel decided to make a spectacular “transition” through the cast.
The Eternals’ cast at Comic-Con
This is the first time that Eternals have been brought to the big screen, but their characters are not so popular in comics. Therefore, Marvel’s decision to change the gender of characters is not very important.
The Sprite character, though thousands of years old, still has the body of a child with a mischievous personality
In contrast to Sprite being the goddess Ajak of the Aztecs, she is an archaeologist with a deep interest in the origin of the Celestials.
In the end, Makkari, a speed lover, is obsessed with the idea of being the fastest person in the universe, changing the origin of this character will also affect Makkari’s relationship and the main character Ikaris.
Sexual intercourse in MCU is not something new. Previously, the role of Ancient One in Doctor Strange also turned from an old Asian man into a Celtic woman with the acting of Tilda Swinton.
Gender of Doctor Strange’s teacher is changed
Then we have the “transgender” of Mar-vell characters in Captain Marvel. Unlike comics, Mar-Vell is Carol Danvers’s lover (Brie Larson), but the character’s gender and origin are also changed to surprise the viewers. At first, this received a lot of objections from fans. However, after all, everything is not working and fans are gradually accepting this change.
The most unexpected character
With Ajax’s transgender case in The Eternals, this will have a greater impact than the rest of the characters. Because Ajax is a legendary god, the leader of the ancient Eternals clan at the time. If Ajax is a goddess on par with Odin, Zeus is synonymous with asserting the position of women throughout human history. This detail can greatly affect religion and history at the time, but it is understandable when Marvel is trying to build a feminine image in their films.
The Marvel’s superwomen
What do you think about this change, is it really necessary? Or Marvel is just too much in bringing feminist elements into their movies. Let’s wait for the characters’ performances in the upcoming movies, to see if Marvel can surprise the audience through The Eternals.
